How the studio works: formats and experience levels

The Studio for Digital Publishing is a place to learn and to work on digital publishing practice. It brings together several course formats that you are free to use and to combine. You enrol for the offers you want credited; every other course remains open to you without registration. What the studio is mainly after is a space in which digital publications can come about, collaboratively or on your own.

The studio's formats
The formats are connected to one another. The editorial team is the centre of the studio, where we talk about the publication formats currently under way and those still planned. In Digital publishing practice you acquire the fundamentals of conceiving, designing and building digital publication formats. The weekly workshops in the skills lab, which you choose freely, introduce you to the tools and techniques that matter for digital publishing. In Open Studio you work on topics of your own or contribute to the studio's ongoing publications, the open calls, and apply what you have learnt so far.

Workshops
Besides the skills lab, every format offers workshops on particular topics that you are welcome to attend. Workshops can be booked individually. Within them, A, B and C describe experience levels. BA and MA students choose offers according to what they actually bring with them. If you are writing your first line of code in the master's programme, you start at A. The workshops are open to all students of the faculty.

You can also find all Studio workshops in the workshop calendar, where you can filter them by learning path.

Learning paths
The learning paths map out the skills that matter in the studio's individual areas and formats.

Intermediale Gestaltung
Digital Publishing is a teaching area within the degree programmes B.A. Intermediale Gestaltung and M.A. Intermedia Design. The teaching on offer across the subject groups is meant to complement each other.

The studio's course formats

Editorial team

The editorial team is the central hub of the Studio, where we discuss current and planned publication formats. It is where we decide what to publish and how to publish it.

Digital publishing practice

The topic is an ongoing Studio project. You go through the entire process, from research and concept development to design, production and publication. The starting point if you have never published before.

Skills lab

Each week, a self-contained workshop introduces a tool or technique for digital publishing, complementing whatever you are currently working on.

Open Studio

The counterpart to the introductory course: You bring the project, not the Studio. This requires you to have gone through the publishing process at least once before.

Exposé

Here, the focus is on your own research question as part of your Bachelor's or Master's thesis project, from finding a topic to final submission.
